Big Day Out
M Ocean WE04484Our established, long-range, active-dynamic daypack for walkers, cyclists and snow tourers has been steadily enhanced since its introduction more than 5 years ago. The revised back system employs our Dyna-FORM internal 3-D frame sheet, slimline shoulder harness and Mini Synchro-FORM 25 independent hip wings. The result is great dynamic stability and comfort whether you are out on foot, skinny skis or the pedals. This 35 litre day pack sizes up perfectly for a long day out on the hills, even a lightweight over-nighter under stars or natural shelter. Adding to its very useful capacity, the bag fit-out includes a stretch over-load panel, side pouches, a choice of two internal compartments for your water bladder and attachments and stabilisation for your essential gear.
This 35 litre pack sizes up perfectly for a long day in the hills, even a lightweight overnighter, under the stars or making use of natural shelter. The harness platform, common to all models in this group, is our new Synchro-FORM Express hip system. At upper back level 3-D shoulder pads grow into a contoured shoulder yoke. Ventilation is superb. Zipped into the harness panel is a simple, firm, closed-cell foam insert. This provides all the harness panel stiffness necessary for a sac whose low slung profile naturally loads nearly all the weight onto your hips. The result is a unique combination of competing objectives: great pack stability and great upper body freedom. If you mountain bike with a daypack don't worry, the independent, freely-moving Synchro-FORM hip wings will offer little resistance to your leg motions.
The main compartment of the pack is entered through an inverted-U zip. We have used an abrasion-proof coated zip here so a cover flap can be dispensed with. (This improves access to the bag but don't be misled, water will eventually seep through this type of zip - use a dry bag inside any pack for things that must remain dry when it's wet). Inside you have a choice of two lightweight water bladder pouches, one vertical, one horizontal. Keep small items handy in the zipped pocket just inside the front panel.
On the outside of the bag we've paid attention not just to providing a range of features but to making them WORK effectively. The side bottle pockets have subtle 3-D design so that even a one litre bottle will fit without snatching volume from the main compartment. Importantly, the 'floating vee' hip side stabiliser straps also work on these bottles to bring them within the overall pack stability. The front 'overload' panel extends up from the base of the pack, securing with three adjusting side-release buckles, two beside the bottle pockets, the third at the top of the pack bag over the zip. The mesh net at the top of this panel fits a bike helmet perfectly, again without robbing the main compartment of capacity. For cyclists there is also a half-pump pocket (near one zip end), low-down reflectors and a mounting band for an LED tail light. If skis need to be carried there are two webbing loops in the base seam at the front and up the top, each side of the mesh net, corresponding retaining straps.
Whatever you do, if you do it at speed and need a pack with a bit of capacity the Big Day Out is an excellent solution.
