Tents: Backpacking Tents

SPACE 1

We have applied the materials and construction techniques used on our popular Space 2 model to create a smaller, lighter package for solo hiking and cycle touring. We have used our unique dihedral 3-way pole hubs to create a low-profile, wedge-shaped tent envelope with an incredibly spacious interior. With the use of low denier, high tenacity nylons throughout, both versions are extremely light given the floor performance has not been sacrificed in the process - the high grade PEU coating delivers a minimum HH of 5,000mm. The Space 1 is uniquely equipped to stand up to strong wind - the conditions that send other tents in this weight category packing. You can invert your walking or ski poles and make them part of the Space 1 framework. Connect up the tent's internal hub-to-hub tension cord as well and the Space 1 achieves a level of stability only seen in heavy, multi-pole geodesic tents.

SPACE 3

All WE Space tents make use of our unique dihedral pole hubs to create incredibly spacious living areas within an efficient, wedge-shaped outer envelope. The Space 3 framework uses two hub pairs over a floor pan that accomodates three full-sized sleep mats, side by side, with extra length at each end. This wide tent, with great sit-up room for all, also uses a full-length transverse pole to add stability and vestibule space. The outer skin can be half or fully rolled back on both sides. The winter inner’s mesh ventilation panels are conveniently located each side near the head end of the tent and independent of the two door panels. If you plan to use the Space 3 in an exposed, high-wind environment the optional fairing available for the foot end of the outer tent greatly reduces aerodynamic drag and adds some extra storage space. SPACE STATION

When your group has made camp and it's raining the problem of getting people together for meals or discussion remains. Everyone is either standing around in their wet-weather shells or retreated to their tents. A big tarp can be a solution if there is no wind and trees are available to pitch it from. That's a small window of use. Our unique solution, the big, single arch WE Space Station uses a simple, diagonal arch to create huge internal volume over a square, fully useful footprint. It combines stability and useful space in a way that the big centre-poled pyramids do not. The Space Station has a single zip entry on one side, can be erected with just the two heavy-duty end pegs supplied, and is fully equipped with multiple peg points and guy cords. The canopy can be quickly slid up the pole on either or both sides to provide wide openings for brilliant cross-ventilation or views. There are three points under the pole arc where walking pole handles can be secured in pockets to provide excellent stability in a fresh breeze. Eight people can easily sit around under the Space Station and it sleeps four or more comfortably.

Tectite 4 UL

The ultimate, simple family backpacking tent. Our own quest to accommodate a family of four lead to the Tectite concept and this extraordinary tent. Its reliable performance in wind and rain, the huge 5.3 square metres of floor space, airy ventilation and complete insect protection, are all achieved at a minimum-pitch weight of just over 2.2 kilograms. Four pegs tension the elevated tub floor which connects to the canopy rim via a full perimeter mesh band. A detachable ceiling panel, acting exactly as an inner tent roof, intercepts the inevitable condensation drips on those still, damp nights. Cycle tourers wanting some space to spread out, or rock climbers looking for a 'crag hotel' will also find much appeal in this cavernous tent.

NOTE September 2016: We have recently added a mesh screen to the Tectite 4 entry and moved to 30d nylon 66 sil/sil Green Apple fabric, in common with the Space tent series. This new model is currently unavailable. Please check with us on planned availability, 2017.
